Cares Card
Abbotsford Cares Card has been an initiative of the Abbotsford Food Bank as a way of addressing the needs of panhandlers and homeless persons in the community since August of 2007.
When a recipient of a Cares Card comes into the food bank we sit down with them and try to get to know them a little better. From there we can connect them with whatever resources we have that might make that day of life on the street a little easier.
- How it Works:
Buy a Cares Card for minimum of $2
(Locations: House of James, Shear Performance, or Abbotsford Food Bank)
Put the Cares Card in your wallet or keep it in your car
Next time you are asked for spare change, or encounter someone in a homeless situation you would like to help, give them a Cares Card
The recipient of the card is able to redeem it at the Abbotsford Food Bank for vouchers, usable around town (e.g.. pizza, hamburger meal, clothing items, coffee, bus tickets, toiletry kits, socks, hair cuts, etc.)
Please contact us if you are interested in becoming a Sponsor or would like to purchase multiple cards.
Garden Box
Good quality fruits and vegetables can be purchased at a discounted price. Garden boxes must be pre purchased before the 2nd friday of the month, and then picked up on the 3rd Wednesday of each month between 11am-1:00pm.
Extreme Weather
The food bank helps coordinate shelter venues for the homeless during harsh weather conditions.
REAL Mentoring
In the Spring of 2010 the food bank started a mentoring program aimed to provide healthy REAL
Relationships, Encouragement, Accountability and Listening support in the lives of people who do not have that currently in place. Our goal is to match food bank clients with caring individuals in the community who can provide support and a listening ear in a one on one format approximately twice a month for one year. We believe this connection will help bridge a gap in our community and positively effect both the lives of the mentee and mentor.
