Connecting Family Through Satellites

The question often gets asked: how does someone end up at the Abbotsford Food Bank? Well, it’s not necessarily a straight forward answer. From our experience, most people exhaust every conceivable safety net before ever entering our building.

Before reading any further, I want you to answer this question: when you were in your greatest time of need, who was the first person you called?

Did you answer it? If you’re like the rest of us, it was probably a family or friend that came to mind. For most of the people that line up outside our doors, however, they don’t have that network to count on. That’s why our job as a Food Bank is so important. For 3,000 people each month, we are the family.

So, with such a great need, how do we do it? The saying, “many hands make light work,” comes to mind. It may sound cheesy, but that doesn’t make it any less true. We depend heavily on the support of our donors, our volunteers, and our service partners.

We wanted you, our extended family, to meet our service partners so that you could know more about the people you are reaching by partnering with the Abbotsford Food Bank. Over the next little while, we want to tell you about the 10 amazing Food Bank satellite locations that are distributing more than 270 hampers every month.

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” – Henry Ford

We went out and interviewed 6 of the 10 satellites. Wow, if you ever need a ‘pick-me-up’, I recommend talking to some people about how they are helping other people or just read the Satellite Blog posts. We were pleasantly surprised by the results. Across the board, each location has said that the partnership has had a positive impact on their existing programming.

The outcomes range from one hundred rides to the food bank saved every month, to feeding people on the street who would have otherwise gone without. They’ve also encouraged participants to try new healthy recipes, experiment with food delivery, and deepen relationships.

Each satellite is so unique that we thought that we would give a dedicated blog post for each location. Stay tuned for more information about our extended family—the satellites.

When you invest in your community through the Abbotsford Food Bank, you are building upon the trusted relationships and strength of our community. Together, we are building an atmosphere where change is possible, hope is attainable, and hunger is no more.
